We have been busy! We got home June 28th and immediately all got Covid, we were all stuck in the house over July 4th but as soon as we could we got outside we got to work. Our lives have been in limbo since we decided at the last second to move to Sealy in 2018, then in 2019 we decided we were going to buy THE boat, we left in 2020, then Covid had us back for the Fall semester then we left again January 2021 and are now back again for good (haha…we will see!) Since we’ve been home we have been working on a large garden, we transformed a shed to a cabin for Jagger and now we are building an animal barn with a guest apartment. We should also close on a historic building any day now in historic downtown Sealy. 9,000 square feet of dirt, wood floors and historic goodness…more on that later!
Derek built our house in 70 days, most of it he did himself but did hire out an electrician, plumber, framers, cabinet and granite guys, and tile workers. It was such a last second decision to move 90 miles away from our home of 9 years that we decided to build a small cabin that could eventually be hauled off, now that we have been there for a few years I don’t see that happening. Any who there are only three bedrooms so we decided it was time for the little two to have their own rooms and so that meant Jagger getting a place of his own, while still on our property.
We debated it all…we looked at campers that he could stay in and then we use when we wanted to travel but geez they are so expensive right now. We moved on from that idea. Next was a container house, I wasn’t crazy at how narrow they were and it was still going to be pricey to finish out, but the big reason we didn’t go with it is the company that moves them needed a 100 foot space to drop it…we kept trees in between our house and his and so we didn’t have that as an option. While debating what our next move was my mother in law offered us her old candle shop that we had converted into a bunk house a few years ago. It was next to her barn and really wasn’t used much. We were super excited to get it and save lots of $$.
First we had to find someone to move it, it took a bit but we found a guy and he came out and moved it for $500. Watching it was so awesome, he drove this thing with a remote, it was like a toy going down the road. Next we gutted it and Derek framed out the new bathroom area and built a wall out of pine, then he painted the interior. Then the exterior, I can’t tell you the name of this paint because it was a mess! I HATED the paint I chose so I poured both gallons in a five gallon bucket and started adding random paint samples then added a quart of black paint to create the color it is now! haha. Derek thought I was crazy. We then added the cedar shutters and the wood under the porch ceiling, the new lights and the awesome cow head that we repainted. We had the white rock brought out and he and I arranged the railroad ties and cleaned up the woods. Next we had workers come in and install the wood floors we got for a steal (.99 a foot) at Floor and Decor, they installed the kitchen cabinets and countertops, bathroom vanity, toilet, ceiling fan, and did the pluming. Derek and his brother finished out the shower.
All in I think we spent around $8k. We furnished it with a new sofa from World Market, a papasan chair from Walmart and a few Knick knacks for decor. I want to buy some cool, funky sign to hang above the sofa at Round Top in a few weeks.
Check it out!
