I’m Behind…post from March 30

“Remember that you once dreamed of being where you are right now” is the messsage I put on our black and white board yesterday. These times are difficult for everyone. We have nothing to complain about and have all the health care and essential workers in our prayers and thoughts. Coronavirus has turned everyone’s world upside down in just a few short weeks. Here on the Wolf Pack we’ve had many amazing moments and a few GET me outta here moments!

We had a great time in Georgetown and had my mom, my sister and Derek’s mom come visit us then our friends Stephen and Julia and their girls Reese and Ryan. Some friends from Sealy came Spring Break to rent a home and we were able to spend time with them. Chat N Chill was our home for the month, it’s a fun beach bar that’s basically the sailors backyard. Events are held everyday like yoga, basket weaving, poker etc. we had a great time and spent lots of $$ there. Jett and the bartenders were buds. We loved hiking up to different points around the area and a Jett enjoyed surfing On the backside of Sand Dollar beach.

Now to the bad. Both of our alternators caught fire. First the port then around two weeks later the starboard. It was scary and intense and really sucked because that’s all Derek could focus on most of the time we were in Georgetown. We met a guy years ago in San Salvador Bahamas that Derek has stayed in contact with and he played a huge role in getting our boat up and running. He put us in contact with a good diesel mechanic and he flew to GT with parts we needed. In the Bahamas nothing is easy, it makes amazon seem like a magical unicorn. If you can’t find it at a local store getting anything here is a huge pain and then you have to pay a large tax once it does finally arrive. So him bringing our parts down was HUGE. Derek and two guys worked on the boat for almost 7 hours before they finally found the problem. It was a HUGE relief, we sat down together had a beer, cheered and we left the marina. Our friends Wes, Michelle and their daughter Lilly were suppose to arrive the next day but decided at the last second it wasn’t a good idea due to travel due to the spreading of Coronavirus. We are super bummed they didn’t get to come but I’m hopefully they will ASAP.

OK, so boats fixed 🤪😂 (yeah right). We left Georgetown and headed towards Long Island for Calbash Bay. It’s so gorgeous, there’s a nice little resort on the beach called Cape Santa Maria. We were able to do one happy hour there before they had to close the resort. Their happy hours incredible, the Bahamas is VERY expensive. A beer there is normally $7 but during happy hour it’s around $5, cocktails were the same price so we loaded up on Rum Punches, at 5pm they start bringing out complimentary conch fritters. They were amazing and they served enough that we were full. It was a great deal for 6 drinks and endless conch fritters for less than $50. We rented a car on March 20th and drove South to Deans Blue Hole, it’s the second deepest hole in the world. Free diving competitions are held there in November each year. Jagger dives pretty deep and said it was creepy and cold down deep. We were able to visit Tiny’s Hurricane Hole the day before it closed for lockdown and LOVED it. It’s one of our favorite Bahamas bars so far!

We went from Long Island to Cat Island for a few days. Derek and Jagger fly fished for bonefish and we relaxed and did lots of school. Now we are back in Calbash. Bahamas is shut down until April 8th, Puerto Rico April 12th. USVI is still open but it would take days to get there and by the time we do it could be on lockdown. Here in the Bahamas we are allowed to fish but we aren’t supposed to go to the beach (we are anchoring in secluded anchorages so we can go for a little while), all restaurants and liquor stores are closed and only one person from each family can go to the grocery store or gas station. Our cruising permit ends April 16th so we have until then to make a decision. I’m praying we can keep heading South and not go back to the USA but only God knows how long this whole thing will last. As of now we plan to go to the Ragged Islands this week after one more trip to the grocery store.
